I?m not quite sure where Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle is going here. ?He starts off strong with an amusing compare and contrast between a softball home-run-hitting exhibition which took place before last night?s Cubs-Giants game and the feckless Giants? bats.

But then he got into some commentary about Giants fans and their seeming obliviousness to the bad baseball with which they have recently been presented and which is sinking the Giants? playoff chances like a stone:

On any given night, your favorite Giant goes 0-for-4 against a team long dismissed from relevance. And?every?night, without fail, the park is filled with enthusiastic patrons, still wrapped in the comfort of last year?s world championship and getting only mildly upset with the proceedings.

I think Jenkins is OK with the show of loyalty ? he favorably compares Giants fans to ?Boston or Philadelphia, where the folks would be hurling insults, obscenities and Double-A batteries,? but there seems to be a bit of ?an?exasperated??wake up you idiots!? tone to this.

I guess it just goes back to the never-resolvable argument about whether ?good fans? continue to come out and cheer for a team going sideways or, rather, if they make the team pay for its incompetence at the turnstile.

Mexico: Remains of 12 found in 2 spots in north (AP)

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico ? Mexican police have discovered seven bodies buried together in a mountain town in northern Mexico and also exhumed five skulls in cotton fields near the border city of Ciudad Juarez.

The bodies of six men and a woman were found in the town of Guachochi over the weekend. Authorities say most had been strangled sometime this month, while one was shot in the head. All the victims had their hands tied behind their back.

Officials said Monday that all seven had gone missing earlier this month.

Outside Juarez, which sits across the border from El Paso, Texas, experts are still excavating in a farm area where the five skulls were uncovered.

Finding bodies in mass graves has been common in Mexico's five-year drug war.

BALTIMORE (AP) - In the wake of a salary-cap purge that stripped the unit of several of its most reliable weapons, the Baltimore Ravens could be a force on offense this season.

By adding wide receiver Lee Evans, fullback Vonta Leach, running back Ricky Williams and soon-to-be left tackle Bryant McKinnie, the Ravens have effectively compensated for the loss of wide receiver Derrick Mason, tight end Todd Heap and running backs Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain.

After Baltimore rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat the Washington Redskins 34-31 in a preseason game Thursday night, quarterback Joe Flacco spoke with delight about the potential of an offense that has long struggled to complement the team's renowned defense.

``We have a good group of guys that can really be effective,'' Flacco said. ``I really think our guys are getting it together now, and I can't wait for our offensive line to settle. I can't wait to see what happens. I think we are really on the way.''

His optimism was not unjust. Evans, the replacement for Mason, caught three passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Second-year tight end Ed Dickson had three catches for 57 yards and Ray Rice followed Leach's lead to run for 72 yards and a score in just over a half of play.

``With him in there,'' Rice said of Leach, ``you know he's going to draw a crowd. So I'm going to follow him and then make my cut off of him.''

Flacco, meanwhile, went 17 for 27 for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns before leaving early in the third quarter.

Things can only get better when McKinnie moves into his accustomed spot at left tackle. Signed as a free agent last week after being cut loose by the Minnesota Vikings, the 6-foot-8 veteran will give Flacco protection on the blind side after Michael Oher moves back to right tackle, where he spent his rookie season in 2009.

``Everything is fluid. I'd love to say that's set in stone, but that's not set in stone,'' coach John Harbaugh said. ``Bryant has played there, Michael has played the right side.''

Left tackle is more prestigious than right tackle, but Oher was willing to make the move - even before he was pulled aside by Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome for a heart-to-heart talk.

``Michael is about as good a person and as great a team guy as I've ever been around in my career,'' Harbaugh said. ``He said it before we said it: `Whatever I need to do to help this be the best football team and the best offensive line it can be (I'll do). All the career stuff can wait.'''

If McKinnie can keep his weight down and stay motivated, the Ravens will have McKinnie and Oher on the outside, Marshal Yanda and Ben Grubbs at the guards and veteran Matt Birk at center.

The Shaw Crew eliminated the Stick Dogs from the playoffs as they won by a score of 11-9. Dale McGrath topped Shaw with two hits while Sherry Cleary, Cheryl Wray and J. J. Ochoa added one each. Ryan Carter had three hits for the Stick Dogs while Jodi Dalton and D. J. Edwards (homerun) added two hits each.

The second games were postponed until next Tuesday due to lightning. "When I made the putt on 15, I asked my caddie for the first time all day, `Where do we stand?' and he said, `We're two ahead right now,'" Simpson said. "I knew I needed to play solid golf on the last three holes, and to birdie 16 was so huge. ... I knew I had a three-shot lead on 18, and as soon as I hit the ball in play, I knew it was probably over."

McNeill made a late charge, with the former Florida State player moving to 15 under with a birdie on No. 17, his sixth birdie of the round. But all he could do after that was hope for a few late bogeys from Simpson.

"Honestly, I thought it was going to be a lot lower," McNeill said of the winning score. "I can only control myself. I can't control what everybody else does. I'm very happy with the way I hit it, the way I played, the way I putted."

Several players with strong Atlantic Coast Conference ties played pivotal roles during the fourth round at the country club where the ACC was founded in 1953 ? and in a college-centric region where school ties run deep.

Simpson was the ACC's player of the year for the Demon Deacons in 2008. McNeill was an all-conference player for the Seminoles in the late 1990s.

And Pettersson grew up in Greensboro, played at North Carolina State, serves on this tournament's board of directors, won it in 2008 and made the daily 70-mile commute from his home in Raleigh.

"I'm disappointed. I'm a competitor," Pettersson said. "I wanted to win this one badly, but Webb outplayed us all."

Pettersson turned in perhaps the most remarkable birdie of the tournament on the par-4 first hole. After sending his drive well wide of the fairway and into a flower pot, he wound up chipping in from about 55 feet.

Gainey, a South Carolina native known as "Tommy Two Gloves" because he wears them on both hands, led or shared the lead after each of the first two rounds. After falling off the pace with two bogeys and a double bogey midway through the round, he reeled off four consecutive birdies on Nos. 12-15 to climb back in it.

The focus this week wasn't solely on the leaders, but on the names moving up and down the FedEx Cup points list.

The Wyndham annually marks the last chance for players to claim spots in the playoffs, and some big names came to Greensboro hoping to play their way in.

Padraig Harrington, who called off a family vacation so he could try to escape the playoff bubble, finished at 6 under and jumped from No. 130 to No. 124. The top 125 qualify for The Barclays later this week in New Jersey.

Ernie Els, who entered at No. 126, made it into the playoff field despite shooting a final-round 72. His 8 under finish pushed him to 118th.

"You don't know in these playoffs," Els said. "I've got to play good golf though. I played really good the first two days. I'd like to get that back."

Among those who didn't make it: Justin Leonard missed a 13-foot putt on the 18th, and that left him at No. 126.

"To try and wait until this week to make it through is just ? you know," Leonard said. "I mean, come on. I had 25 other weeks to play like this."

Will Sarah Palin Run For President?

Sarah Palin has not said if she will enter the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, but a growing number of GOP insiders feel she will.

Former George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove and tea party organizer Peter Singleton are both among the list of people who think she'll be in, and soon.

Rove said on "Fox News Sunday" that he would bet on it.

"Well, I'm not much of a gambler but the schedule she's got next week in Iowa looks like that of candidate, not celebrity," Rove told host Bret Baier.

Rove noted the video her PAC released Friday, which reaches out to Iowa voters. That video "strikes me as pre-presidential campaign," Rove said.

Palin is planning to speak at the Tea Party of America's "Restoring America" rally in Iowa September 3, which Singleton says could signal her entry.

We're confident she'll run, and we've worked to build that really strong grassroots base that you have to build for a candidate to be successful."

"Labor Day will kick off the Republican campaign for the nomination," Singleton told National Review. "She is going to make a major, major speech."

One that will refudiate so many Obama policies, no doubt.

If Sarah does run, we can guarantee three things:

1. She's going to have a tough time overtaking the likes of fellow GOP candidates Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry.
2. See will lay on the folksy, you-betcha charm.
3. Mercede Johnston will have a field day.
