Romney asks Republicans to rally around him

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Reuters) - Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney worked on Friday to rally party leaders behind his cause and overcome lingering suspicions that he is too moderate, but failed to get all to pledge allegiance.

Romney called for unity at a Republican National Committee conference in the Arizona desert that brought together party representatives from each state, some of whom had backed one of Romney's rivals for the nomination.

In his speech, Romney kept the focus on Democratic President Barack Obama's handling of the sluggish U.S. economy. He recognized his vanquished Republican rivals, from Michele Bachmann to Rick Santorum, mentioning them all by name and thanking them for having the courage to run.

"Each one of them is going to play a vital role in making sure we win in November," said Romney. The former Massachusetts governor needs as much support as he can get from fellow Republicans in what is expected to be a tough fight with Obama as the November 6 election approaches.

Romney lagged Obama by 6 percentage points in a new NBC/Wall Street Journal survey, although a few other polls have shown him ahead.

Some Republican committee members declined to fall in line with Romney's attempts to bring the party together under his candidacy after months of bruising primary fights.

In a private reception before his luncheon speech, Republican delegates were asked to sign a pledge to support Romney and about 100 did so, a campaign official said.

But Iowa's three conservative representatives did not sign the pledge and CNN said there was a heated exchange in the hallway outside the reception.

Some party representatives had been hoping one of Romney's rivals would become the standard bearer. Iowa, for example, narrowly voted for Santorum over Romney in its January nominating contest.

Reinforcing the idea that Romney, who is trying to dispel criticism that he is too stiff, has a "likeability gap" with voters, a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll offered a glaring picture: 56 percent said they had a favorable opinion of Obama while only 35 percent said the same of Romney.

The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll also showed that the president is seen as more likeable and someone who cares more than Romney, a former business executive, about average people. Romney had 43 percent to Obama's 49 percent in a match-up.

But in a key area - ideas to improve the U.S. economy - Romney led Obama by 40-34 percent.

'COMING ON BOARD'

In his second presidential bid, Romney is playing well to the Republican establishment. More state chairmen are now getting behind him after the departure from the race last week of Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who was his main rival.

"My sense is that when the primary process started, a lot of state chairs liked a lot of the different candidates, but now that Romney is almost the presumptive nominee, they're all coming on board," said Steve Duprey, a party leader in New Hampshire. "He's proven himself after a long, rugged battle and I think people are starting to get enthusiastic."

The Republican presidential nominee from 2008, Senator John McCain of Arizona, conducted a symbolic passing of the torch to Romney at Friday's event.

"I am so gratified to see our party coming together on a solid team that is going to elect him president of the United States," McCain said at the lunch.

Duprey said Romney should use his wife, Ann, as often as possible on the campaign trail to lighten up his image.

"The more time he spends out on the campaign trail with Ann Romney, who is his best surrogate, and the more time he spends in smaller, more intimate events ... the more people will see he's a competent and genuine person," Duprey said.

Romney also moved to try to improve his standing among Hispanic voters, staging a roundtable to discuss issues important to them. Hispanics could be a key voting bloc in Southwestern states like Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.

Romney sat down in Tempe with a group of Hispanic business, education and local officials picked by the local Republican Party. He invited them to raise anything they wanted from economic conditions to illegal immigration, a big issue in Arizona.

Tony Rivero, a city councilman in Peoria, Arizona, called for a comprehensive overhaul of U.S. immigration laws. Democrats and Republicans in Washington have been stalemated for years over what to do about the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.

"We have a broken system," Rivero said. "I think we have to look at the issue and solve it completely."

Manuel Pacheco, former president of the University of Arizona, told Romney he likes the concept behind the proposed "Dream Act," which would offer a path to citizenship for young immigrants through military service and college education, but recognizes that it is politically "toxic" at the moment. He called on Romney to offer a "glimmer of hope" on the topic.

Romney did not comment on the immigration problem at the event or at a subsequent campaign rally.

But he told Fox News he would like the United States to move ahead with immigration reform legislation and find a "realistic way" for more legal immigration.

"I'd like people who have skill and experience and who speak English, education, I'd like to make it easier for them to come to the country," he said.

Republicans believe they can draw Hispanic voters from Obama by pressing Romney's economic message, including the case that the growing minority group has as big a need for jobs as anyone else.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said the main issue for Hispanics was jobs, not immigration, which he said in any event Obama has failed to address in three years as president.

"He didn't deliver a darned thing on immigration reform," Priebus told Reuters.

Young Bay Area Slam Poets To Hit The Stage : News: SFAppeal

YPS_2010_Miles_Bridges_credit_Scott_Chernis.jpg

Dozens of young poets are preparing to take the stage this weekend for the semifinals of a youth spoken word competition in which Bay Area teens raise their voices and bare their souls.

Youth Speaks, a San Francisco-based nonprofit founded in 1996, is holding its 16th annual Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam, which began earlier this month with several hundred young poets in the preliminary rounds.

That number was whittled down to about 40 young people whose booming voices will fill auditoriums this weekend as they compete for one of 12 spots in the final round on April 27 at San Francisco's Masonic Auditorium.

Queen Shabazz, 17, a junior at San Francisco's Lick Wilmerding High School, is one of the semifinalists.

She learned about Youth Speaks from a community outreach coordinator at school her freshman year but wasn't too interested until she attended an open mic event in Oakland and was "blown away" by the performances, she said.

Shabazz is now a seasoned performer herself, and says her works--like those of most other Youth Speaks poets--are deeply personal.

"I write about my family. I write about life," she said.

She said her poems explore how confronting reality can sometimes be difficult.

"Even though reality can sometimes be daunting to people, I write about how we can change that," Shabazz said.

Shabazz said she was comfortable with public speaking when she joined Youth Speaks, but getting up in front of a crowd was a challenge for another semifinalist, 18-year-old Monica Mendoza, of Oakland.

"It was scary 'cause, first of all, I never really did any public speaking before Youth Speaks," Mendoza said.

Additionally, she said, she feels vulnerable sharing so much of herself with a large group of people.

"I never know if they actually care, if they actually want to hear this stuff," she said.

Mendoza has written since she was a child but never shared it with anyone until she joined Youth Speaks as a junior at Oakland's Life Academy.

She now attends Chabot College, and said the poem she performed in the preliminary rounds is about her parents and growing up as a child of immigrants.

"When I was young, people used to bother me about it," she said.

The audience liked her piece, she said.

"It always feels amazing to share something that's so personal and everybody being warm and welcoming," Mendoza said. "It just felt great."

Youth Speaks founder James Kass, a poet himself, was inspired to start the program in the mid-1990s while he was studying for his master's degree in creative writing at San Francisco State University.

At that time, he said, there were a number of state propositions, including Proposition 187, that he felt targeted young people, particularly those of color.

He felt compelled to help those young people express themselves.

"Everybody was talking about teenagers, but there were really very few opportunities for teens to be present in their own voices," Kass said.

It was the beginning of the dot-com boom, and he and a poet friend collected donated computers and began going to high schools offering free writing workshops. If students put in 40 hours with the program, they would get a free, used computer, he said.

The program quickly grew in popularity, and eventually, Kass said, "we didn't need to have donated computers anymore."

These days, Youth Speaks works with an estimated 35,000 to 40,000 students through its programs in schools, he said.

The Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam is one of a number of components of the program. The winners will go on to represent Youth Speaks at the national Brave New Voices competition this summer.

Youth Speaks serves mostly teens between the ages of 13 and 19. Those interested can attend one of the organization's regular workshops or open mic events.

"Kids literally can just show up," Kass said.

More information on the program and the semifinal rounds can be found on the organization's website at www.youthspeaks.org.

The "Grand Slam Finals" will take place on Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Auditorium at 1111 California St. in San Francisco. General admission is $18, and those ages 24 or younger pay $6.

Rome cracks down on marauding centurions

The city has given a deadline of April 6 for the tourist terrors to clear away from the Colosseum area.

By Adam L. Freeman,?Contributor / April 2, 2012

Rome has given the centurions a deadline to clear out. The solders in question aren't from the ranks of an ancient legion, but are modern-day performers who pose for tourist?photos at the Colosseum.

Men and women decked out in chest plates and helmets eke out a?tax-free living at Rome?s most popular attraction, posing for photos with foreign?visitors for 5 or 10 euros. Disoriented, jet lagged, or simply scared,?tourists have been known to pay up to 50 euros ($67). Some have been roughed?up when they refuse.

Arrests were made last summer in an undercover operation with police?in tunics and sandals handcuffing centurions and gladiators for?ripping off tourists. A recent Italian media report cited a policeman?as saying the centurions are all ex-convicts, ?every last one of?them.?

Now the city government says ?basta!? and wants them to pack up their?swords, shields, and ensigns and clear out by April 6.

?This will end badly. We?ll wage a revolution. We?ll burn down the?Coliseum rather than move from here,? a 21st-century centurion?recently told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Along with the fake ancient Roman soldiers, the city aims to rid?itself of the vast illegal industry of food and souvenir vendors that?feeds off the 6 million people who every year visit the site where?Russell Crowe avenged his family?s murder in the 2000 sword-and-sandal blockbuster "Gladiator."

City and national officials say they are defending?Rome-the-living-museum from an image akin to theme parks where?visitors feast on fast food and ham it up for the camera with?fairytale characters.

But the Italian economy is in recession and its prisons overcrowded so government bureaucrats should be vigilant for unrest?in the legionary ranks. They might want to reconsider a plan that puts?ex-cons out of work.

Florida Elder Law and Estate Planning: Summitt steps down less ...

Pat Summitt, 59, the celebrated coach of the University of Tennessee women's basketball team, resigned her post this week, less than a year after being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's Disease tends to progress more quickly in younger patients than in older ones. Summitt is one of the 5% of Americans with Alzheimer's Disease diagnosed with the devastating disease before age 65.

My guess is that Summitt has already put her vital legal plans in place. If not, she needs to do so without delay, while she is competent to do so. Summitt has a son with her ex-husband, and she will certainly want to provide for him under her estate plan. ?She also needs a Durable Power of Attorney to allow someone to manage her financial affairs, and?advance health care directives such as a Health Care Power of Attorney?authorizing someone to make her medical decisions for her. A Living Will may be another good idea. We wish Summitt all the best in her journey. If you or a loved one are facing the challenge of Alzheimer's Disease, call our Florida Elder Law Offices?at 800-893-9911 to schedule an appointment for our Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens or Port St. Lucie locations. We will help you set up a legal plan that will protect you, your assets and your family.?Also consider joining The Karp Law Firm in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease. A Celebrity Memoir Ghostwriter's FAQ ? Thought Catalog

Everyone has a story, but some stories are simply better than others, and as an ?ber-famous person, yours is one of the best, easily in the top three of all time. There?s The Bible, The Fountainhead, and Your Forthcoming Book. You and your manager want to confess your darkest, skankiest secrets to the world, but who has time to sit in a room and write them down? Imagine the toll on your body. It?s not like Tim Tebow wrote his memoir while quarterbacking for the Broncos or Bristol Palin polished drafts while dancing with the stars and rearing her child. They got one of their smart, religious, writerly friends to do it.

Ghostwriters, they?re called, including the nondenominational ones. The problem is ghostwriters are very different than you, the megastar. In fact, they?re completely the opposite. Here are some common questions about these mysterious ?people you must deal with to publish a book.?

My ghostwriter doesn?t look well. Is he/she sick?

Not likely. Most ghostwriters remain very pale from staying indoors all day. Their skin is nearly translucent and would be theoretically beautiful if it wasn?t dusted with mild acne. They prefer loose clothing, tend to mumble, and shift around when they walk. Really, it?s no accident they?re called ghostwriters! A good rule of thumb is the less healthy your ghostwriter looks, the harder working he or she will be. So don?t worry. It sounds like you snagged a fantastic ghostwriter.

My ghostwriter seems so very sad. Why?

Great question. Ghostwriters are emotionally haunted people. There is no one reason, only various theories. In his or her spare time, your ghostwriter writes other more personal things, which obviously don?t pay the bills. Never under any circumstances should you read your ghostwriters ?literary? work, or you will begin to toe the depressing gulf between art and commerce your ghost is trapped inside. You see, in the same way real life ghosts are condemned to haunt one area, all writers, including ghostwriters, have one central issue they ?circle around.? Think of it as their persona, only not lucrative like yours. Your persona evolves with each album, movie, or TV season, and the public demands more, in the form of money! Writers can?t help but write about one thing. Again, we know not why. Even the fanciest, most respected ghostwriter is slogging away at a book that will sell only a fraction of what yours will.

Not to put your ghostwriter down. That they try deserves admiration. However, the topics they tackle tend to be really depressing. Imagine sitting at a desk all day, obsessing over war and animal cruelty, like Hemingway did. Now replace Hemingway with your no name ghostwriter and war with a made-up family living in Connecticut. Exactly. Wouldn?t you be sad too? Consider it a service you?re doing for these forlorn spirits. Your ghostwriter is undoubtedly thrilled to walk three hundred pages in your expensive shoes. He/she just has a hard time showing it, because of a latent personality disorder.

Can I lie to my ghostwriter?

Please! Did you get to where you are today by not lying? Is it a lie to print ?by you? on the front cover, regardless of whether you also put ?with (someone who no one knows)? in tiny type? If human memory is fragile, then celebrity memory is super delicate gilded bone china filled with the finest cocaine. You can barely separate what happened at this year?s Teen and/or People?s Choice Awards. Do readers expect you to recount your rise to fame without elaborating on some details? Readers are bored, half-frightened, and most likely purchasing your book en masse at an airport or Wal-Mart. Rise from the ashes of your imagined difficult childhood. Be the complex person no one knows you may or may not be.

Can I have sex with my ghostwriter?

Some weirdo celebrities do sleep with normal civilians. In spite of their pallor, your ghostwriter may seem interesting and sensitive. But imagine the consequences of introducing your ghostwriter to your lifestyle. What if he/she uses your moisturizers? Then they?ll ask to borrow your car. Next they?ll be working out with your personal trainer and doing Transcendental Meditation with your live-in guru. It?s a dangerous game to play. If you can?t control your desires, the same rule applies to ghostwriters as it does to vampires: never let him/her cross the threshold to your dwelling. Intimacy should happen on neutral ground, like a hotel or in a supply closet at the publishing house.

My book is almost done. It looks like a lot of work and I don?t have time to read it. Do I have to?

Remember, this is your story! You?re the most qualified person to fudge your way through a meeting or three. Fallback critiques are ?the middle needs work,? ?it needs to be grittier,? and the crit/warning combo, ?should I just write the last chapter myself?? Make sure you nail the photo captions in those glossy pages that everyone can?t help but turn to when they?re deciding on whether to buy your book. Speaking of pictures, maybe you should just come up with a children?s book in five minutes and force your ghostwriter to work on that. Those things are selling like hotcakes. TC mark

Home Improvement | Installing An Indoor Pool In Your Home :: By ...

Indoor pools have a number of benefits. It?s a great option for both recreational and fitness purposes, especially if you happen to live in an area where the mercury tends to dip often. Additionally, it adds considerably to the market value of your property.

While building an indoor pool may be a welcome idea, it is important to take into consideration the baggage it tends to bring along with itself. Cost of construction and maintenance facilities are areas that need particular attention when you are thinking of building an indoor pool. Because your indoor pool will interact directly with its immediate environment, that is your living space, it might prove a nagging nuisance if installed incorrectly or maintained inadequately. The first step towards building a pool therefore is to chalk out exactly how you intend to get it built and what your method of maintenance will be.

Your indoor pool maybe a part of the new house you are building or a new addition to your existing building. Leaving room for a pool in a house in the process of being built is obviously easier than inserting it into a preexisting structure, which may require a large extent of alteration to your home?s structure.

In either situation, a pool kit might be exactly what you need. A pool kit is an easy, cheap way of building indoor pools. Pool kits come in a range of options and their cost varies according to their features. The individual units of these pools, being easy to dismantle and fold, can be easily taken through gateways, making them effortless to bring into and set up within an established structure. If you are a Do-It-Yourself enthusiast, you can roll up your sleeves and install these yourself. However, if you are unsure about the details of the installation procedure or are just plain inexperienced, make sure you get help from your local electrician and plumber for installation.

A pool contractor will take much of the responsibility and most of the worries, which the installation process tends to come with, off your shoulders. Employing a contractor is of course a pricier option than buying a kit, but it is undoubtedly safer and less of a hassle.

Pool contractors take care of almost every aspect of building indoor pools. They supervise all the plumbing and building work, buy the materials you need (often at whole sale prices due to their knowledge of cheaper stores) and plan all the minute details you might yourself be too much of a novice to notice or take care of.

If you decide to employ a contractor, make sure you choose one affiliated to the APSP (Association of Pool and Spa Professionals). Under qualified contractors will only add to your woes rather than reducing them. Ask your friends and neighbors, who have got indoor pools installed in their homes, for references. You should also search online and compare quotes before finally choosing a contractor for the job.

Going Green with Charter Bus Ohio

The state of the environment has become an international concern because of the effects of climate change. It is no wonder so all nations are doing their part to encourage their citizens to opt for greener options in consumer products and services. If you are planning a group tour and want to ensure that you still do your part for the environment, you should consider charter bus Ohio services. Charter bus services are a green option for transporting your group and ensuring everyone still has fun.

Using a charter bus is the most fuel efficient way to travel. If your group opted to travel as individuals, they would either drive or use an airplane to get to the destination. Buses consume less fuel than many other means of transport including airplanes, trains and even cars.

Yes, the bus will consume less fuel for each passenger than your car would by taking only you to the venue.

Research has shown that the average bus consumes about 797 BTU for each passenger it carries. All other means of transport consume more than double this amount. Airplanes have been shown to consume 4847 BTUs for each passenger and trains 2450. It may be shocking to many people to find out that their personal cars consume an average of 3630 BTUs. All these figures are more than double the amount of fuel consumed by a charter bus for a single passenger. ?

If you want to further reduce your effect on the environment, you can go a step further and search for a charter bus Ohio service that has switched to clean burning fuel or natural fuels. More companies are opting for these cleaner fuels as they are more affordable.

The government is also supporting their efforts by offering the companies incentives such as loans and grants as well as reducing taxes charged on the company.
?
With the cleaner fuel in buses you can drive around the countryside knowing that you are not contributing to the heavy smog and smoke that is ruining the environment. Opting for a green charter bus service also means that you are supporting the campaign to conserve the environment. You will be supporting a company that has shown concern for their environment and will therefore further their efforts and perhaps influence other companies to follow the same trend.

You will find that using a charter bus offers you the freedom you need while on tour. You can use your bus like a taxi to ferry the group from the hotel to tourist attraction sites. This will save you money. You will also still be able to ensure that everyone arrives at the venue on time and all people are catered for.

Samsung to unveil Galaxy S III in London on May 3

Samsung invite

You can forget all those fake renders and dubious press invites -- this is where the real Galaxy S III story begins. Samsung Mobile has just sent out the invite above to UK press, along with details of a "Samsung Unpacked" event in London on May 3. The message asks members of the press to "come and meet the next Galaxy." That'll be the Galaxy S III, then. Samsung says it plans on live streaming the event, which kicks off at 7pm local time (2pm EDT, 11am PDT), via its official Facebook page.

We'll be there, of course, bringing you live coverage of the Galaxy S III -- sorry, the "next Galaxy" -- as it's unveiled. Keep it locked to AC in the weeks ahead for all the latest developments, as we await one of the biggest Android announcements of the year.

StopTheHacker Web-Malware Scanning

You've installed antivirus protection for your company's PCs and set it to scan regularly, right? StopTheHacker Web-Malware Scanning (from $10/month) extends similar protection to your company's website. Depending on the level of service you choose, it will check whether your site has been blacklisted, detect known Web-based malware, detect as-yet-unknown Web threats, protect your corporate Facebook page, and even fix found threats automatically.

This is important stuff. A hack attack on your company website can be devastating. Customers won't thank you for infesting their PCs with drive-by downloads. Google and others may blacklist your site, marking it as dangerous in search results; getting off the blacklist can take time. Peter Jensen, CEO of StopTheHacker, states that at any given time 2.5 to 5 percent of all websites are infested with malware, and 75 percent are vulnerable to malware attack.

Levels of Service
StopTheHacker offers a free service that does nothing but keep track of blacklists and warn you any time your site gets blacklisted. Of course, once you've been blacklisted you're already in trouble, but knowing it happened is better than sailing along in blissful ignorance.

At the basic $10 per month protection level, StopTheHacker regularly checks all pages on your site for known viruses and Web-based malware. If the scan finds that a threat has been injected into your website's code it reports on the source of the problem, right down to the offending lines of code. You also get a "StopTheHacker Trust Seal" to display on your site.

The $20 per month Professional subscription adds advanced detection of threats that aren't already known, using artificial intelligence techniques. At this level you can request automatic cleaning of any found malware?very handy if your small business doesn't have an in-house Web designer. You'll also get protection for the corporate Facebook wall.

The one additional service you'll get by going for the $50 per month Business level is a scan for vulnerabilities. Besides scanning for known and unknown threats, StopTheHacker will analyze your website for apps and components that are out of date and therefore insecure. Finally, at the $100/month Enterprise level, experts from StopTheHacker will perform annual security audit on your site, spending a day consulting with your webmasters.

The $20 per month subscription appears to offer the most bang for the buck, and indeed, StopTheHacker identifies it as "most popular."

Switched On: When the smartphone giveth, Part 1

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Part II of this article will be coming next week -- stay tuned!

The rise of smartphones hasn't been kind to makers of devices such as digital cameras, digital music players and portable GPS devices. Handsets with a rich selection of apps have been increasingly cannibalizing sales of these products, leaving few ways for these once hot holiday gift items to compete. In some cases, though, they have enabled functionality that was once envisioned for standalone products that either failed in the market or never went much beyond a niche audience. Here are five examples of failed devices that never made much headway. The concepts behind them, though, ultimately found acceptance on smartphones.

Sergey Brin says the internet is under attack by governments, Apple and Facebook

Sergey Brin says the internet is under attack by governments, apple and facebook

One of the qualifications for scoring a CE-Oh no 'round here is actually being a CEO -- so Sergey Brin does not receive that honor. We will, however, draw attention to what some might call his hyperbolic ramblings. In an interview with the Guardian, Google's cool uncle said he was worried about the state of the internet and that his company could not have flourished in an online ecosystem like today's. According to Brin, the threats are coming from all sides -- most notably governments. While oppressive regimes like those in China and Iran get top billing, the US doesn't escape without criticism thanks to SOPA and PIPA which seemed perilously close to passing with support from the media industry. The co-founder also took shots at Apple and Facebook, which he said have built "really restrictive" walled gardens. For more smack talk from one of the most influential men in the tech industry, hit up the source link.

How Kik Survived The Group Messaging Wars And Built A Sweet Mobile App For Controlling TVs

click-uiIf a consumer mobile fad comes and goes, and you don't play consolidation musical chairs, what do you do next? This is kind of what happened to Kik, a Canadian startup that took off with the explosive growth of its messaging app last year. Amid the hype around messaging, Kik raised $8 million in funding from RRE Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures. Not too long after, Kik's rivals Beluga and GroupMe got acquired in some respectable (but not crazy huge) deals by Facebook and Skype last year. Meanwhile, Kik has stayed independent and is charting a completely different course. About two months ago, they launched Clik, a mobile app that lets you control a TV right from your phone. There are a few steps to making it work, but the major plus to Clik is that it doesn't require additional hardware. You point your desktop or smart TV browser at ClikThis.com, which generates a unique QR code (which are two-dimensional barcodes). Then you open the Clik iPhone or Android app, aim the camera at the screen, and the phone syncs to the TV or computer. Once they're connected, you can use your phone like a remote control to play YouTube videos on your TV.

Tom Meyers: 4-Star Hotel Deal: What's It Really Costing You?

Here's the scenario: You're researching hotels for an upcoming trip to Paris, and you find a cute two-star hotel in the Latin Quarter for ?88 a night. It sounds like a good rate.

But you dream of an upgrade. What if you spent just a little bit more on a three-star -- or maybe even a four star. You search around and find a four-star hotel with rates for a bit more -- ?135 a night.

For a four-star hotel? The more you ponder it the more reasonable it becomes. Although it's higher than you had budgeted for Paris, you talk yourself into it.

And in the end, it will only cost you ?47 a night more than that other hotel, right?

That depends upon what other charges might get in the way...

"Affordable" four-star hotels
Many three- and four-star hotels will lower their rates to appear more competitive in hotel search results, but then make up the difference with little extra charges in the end.

Meanwhile, cheaper one- and two-star hotels start out cheap, and usually wind up cheap, because they tack on fewer charges. Ironically, these cheaper hotels sometimes offer comparable services, yet don't charge for them!

It's the little things
I review hotels for a living, focusing almost entirely on Europe's largest cities. Here are some common "bill enhancers" that I often see in swankier hotels in Europe (and, for that matter, in the U.S., too):

Wi-Fi charges: A wireless Internet connection is an especially common "up-sell" for upscale hotels. ?10 a night, even ?15 a night is not unusual. (I once paid ?20 a night in Amsterdam for a connection and am still mad about it.) In one- and two-star hotels, however, Wi-Fi is often offered for free, especially in a city like Paris.

Breakfast: While one- and two-star hotels often charge ?6-10 for a simple breakfast in Paris, a four-star property may charge ?15-25 for a breakfast buffet. (Sure, the experience will probably be more luxurious, but that's one pricey pancake!)

Cancellation charges: When searching for hotels, the initial rate you see may be a special "non-refundable" rate, and may jump by 10-20 percent if you want to upgrade to a more flexible refundable rate. Be warned, however, that even the refundable rates come with some limitations.

Bottles of water: This is one of my favorites. Welcome to your room! Enjoy this bottle of water -- for a really steep price! The "not-free bottle" is a common tactic used in expensive hotels everywhere.

2012-04-05-ParisMarignan.jpg

One-star wonders
When I'm reviewing cheap hotels in Paris, I'm constantly reminded that so many budget hotels give away extras that more expensive hotels would charge for.

For example, the one-star Hotel Marignan in Paris' Latin Quarter, which I reviewed back in January, offers large rooms that are great for families, free breakfast and free Wi-Fi access in the rooms. Even better, they have a guest kitchen (and will make space for you in the fridge) and even have washing machines and dryers for the guests (with free soap). Doubles are ?64-103.

Of course, this hotel isn't for everyone. It's a simple, small place. The reception closes at 10:45 p.m., although guests are free to come and go with their room key. Most notably, the hotel doesn't have an elevator (which is a big deal for many travelers).

However, when you book a room at the Marignan, at least you know what you're going to pay when you check out. All the extras have already been paid for.

Have you been "extra charged" at a hotel? Leave a comment and tell us about it!

Despite low mortgage rates, the refinance share of mortgage applications decreased for the eighth consecutive week, which is the lowest refinance share since July 29, 2011.??

The share of mortgage applications for investment properties increased to 8.3% in March compared to 7.4% in February 2012.? The increase in investor share was driven by refinance applications, as the share of purchase applications for investment homes decreased.?

These figures are based on a national survey, and may not reflect local market conditions.

Introducing: Emily Eggleston

This is a series of Q&As with young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.

Today we introduce you to Emily Eggleston (blog, Twitter)

Hello, welcome to The SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?

Iowa. I grew up in two similarly sized towns, Mason City and Marshalltown.

How did you get into science and how did you get into writing? And how did these two trajectories fuse into becoming a science writer?

I loved science as a little girl. My elementary school birthday and Christmas gifts were a microscope, telescope, chemistry set, etc. As an adult, I still find science intriguing and even better, valuable. That fine-tuned logic is essential to good science and is refreshing in a chaotic world. As for the writing, I think I like to write because I?ve always loved to read. The more you read, the better your write. So I suppose writing is fun for me because reading has sculpted my mind to think in words.

Why did you decide to attend a specialized science/health/environmental writing program instead of a generalized journalism or writing program, or just starting a blog and hoping to break into the science writing business?

I was already pursuing a masters of science at the University of Wisconsin ? Madison when I decided to follow my long-standing interest in journalism. Luckily the professional-track journalism masters program only a few buildings over specialized in one of my strengths, science.

Which science writing program did you attend? Why did you choose that one? What are your best experiences there?

The University of Wisconsin ? Madison professional-track journalism M.A. One of my best experiences here is working with Deb Blum, who is not only an incredible writer, but also a great teacher.

What professional experience you have had so far ? publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?

I write and edit for a local news website, Madison Commons and am looking forward to my first internship this summer, with the investigative news team at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. For the past two years I?ve been a research assistant in a biogeochemistry lab, completing my Masters in geography. My thesis revolves around soil chemistry analysis.

Do you write a personal or science blog? How much do you use social media networks, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube etc., to promote your own and your friends? work, to learn and to connect?

My personal blog, Curious Terrain includes posts on science, food issues, journalism, and a bit on my growing interest in data journalism. On Twitter I am @emilyeggleston. I use Twitter to keep up with what everyone else is writing and talking about and to share my latest writing.

Apart from writing, do you also do other aspects of science communication, e.g., podcasts, video, art/illustration, photography, infographics, or do you do any coding, web design and programming?

I?m very interested in data visualization and working to become proficient with Google Fusion Tables, Tableau, ArcMap and other tools.

How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?

I know that I am drawn to data visualizations as story elements and I think there will be more and more of that in digital media. I think interactivity will be huge, whether that?s a slideshow, a digital model, a timeline or something else. The bigger a young journalist?s toolbox, the better. Many of the tools will likely be software proficiencies, audio/visual media production, and perfecting many different lengths, from super short (think tweet) to long-form. The ultimate goal of diversifying our storytelling abilities ? hopefully this results in flexible, effective, and creative journalists, though I do worry about about whether or not to specialize my toolbox.

Thank you!
